Research and Innovation

The movements towards the creation of technological parks, both in national and international level, are always growing. In Brazil there are many examples of this nature. A technological park comprehends a physical area, conveniently urbanized, destined for companies that work with technology to be set close to universities taking advantage of the scientific and technical capacity of the researchers and laboratories. For the universities, the parks represent an opportunity to obtain financing, improvements, feedback from companies and opportunities for researchers. (Solleiro, 1993)

PUCRS has been concerned about responding to those challenges. For long years the university has been investing aggressively on qualification of its teachers, reaching the level of the country’s best universities. They have created an environment and an enviable physical infrastructure for teaching, researching, organizing events and providing services.

In this direction, PUCRS created in December 1999 the AGT (the Technological and Intellectual Property Management Agency) aiming to develop institutional mechanisms to coordinate and make possible the relationship with companies and social institutions. Since then, they have increased significantly the number of partnerships with companies (such as HP, Dell, AES-SUL, Telefônica, RGE, Parks, Quantiza, etc.) acquiring a good experience on the subject.

Finally, PUCRS created its Scientific and Technological Park – TecnoPUC – destining 5.4ha of its Campus to its construction. Link: http://www.pucrs.br/agt/tecnopuc/

Foreseeing this opportunity of scientific and technical improvement, Quantiza Systems decided to have its own research center inside TecnoPUC, having established there a software engineering research laboratory, focusing especially on development processes using Model Driven Engineering (MDE) and Model Driven Architecture (MDA) technologies.

Quantiza participates actively of CePES as a research partner. The Software Engineering Research Center (CePES) acts on performing Pure and Applied research on several software engineering sub-areas. The researches generate results that can be integrated to prototypes of tools, processes, methods and techniques to be applied in the industry. CePES aims to provide opportunities to integrate companies and university through research projects that have innovation as a characteristic.

The research themes are defined based on the partners’ needs and the interest topics related to the state-of-the-art of scientific and technological advance.

Today, the following topics can be found amongst the areas of work of CePES:
• Software reuse;
• Systems Development Processes;
• Multi-agent Systems Development;
• Software Metrics;
• Business Process Intelligence;
• Project Management;
• Process Improvement;
• Distributed Software Development;
• Experimental Software Engineering.
